Pickleball Fever Sweeps Overdale: Community Tournament Draws Big Crowds

OVERDALE – The sound of plastic paddles hitting plastic balls echoed through Overdale Community Park this weekend as dozens of residents gathered for the town’s first-ever "Pickleball Paddle Battle." The event, organized by the local recreation department, saw a surprise turnout of over 60 participants and twice as many spectators, solidifying pickleball’s place as the community's fastest-growing sport.

The atmosphere was electric as players of all ages—from energetic teenagers to experienced seniors—competed in friendly doubles matches throughout the day.

"It's incredible," said Mark Davis, 58, who took up the sport last year. "It's competitive, but so social. The court is smaller than tennis, so you’re always chatting with your partners and opponents."

Pickleball, which blends elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, has experienced explosive growth nationwide, and Overdale is no exception. In response to high demand, the recreation department converted two underutilized tennis courts into four permanent pickleball courts earlier this spring.

"Seeing the community come together like this is exactly what we want," said Mayor Evelyn Reed, who stopped by to cheer on the players.

With courts filled to capacity every evening, town officials hinted that plans for additional court conversions could be on the horizon for next season.
